Bridal Hair Round-Up, October 2009

October 3, 2009

I’ve found some more terrific wedding hairstyles I’d love to share with you! Next week, I’ll be unveiling a few new products to join the DTA line up…but for now, I hope these get those bridal wheels turning!

Definitely more of a “done do” than a few of the bridal designers are showcasing, but I like the way the front piece swoops to the side, and the incorporation of small hair pins and then a larger piece up front. Perfect for an outside reception.

A little more deconstructed, this bride has both the “messy do” AND the hair pins. Like!

Here’s another that has the smooth front / tousled back look - with the addition of the hair pin, it looks dressy but not too much.

I just love a cascade of curls.

Last but not least: a smoother, much more sophisticated updo. The single hair ornament makes quite a statement against her jet black hair. If you are lucky enough to have hair like this, take advantage and minimize the adornment. It’s a great look.

A Slightly “Different” Solution If Combs Don’t Stay In Your Hair

July 30, 2009

Perhaps you’ve been admiring one of the combs on this site - but think your thin hair simply won’t support a comb. You’ve tried before, but you and combs just don’t seem to like each other. What’s another alternative?

Enter the Ratt.

A “ratt” is something our great-grandmothers knew very well. It’s a small amount of your own hair, gathered while brushing your hair, to add body and thickness underlying your hairstyle. It is placed underneath the hair attached to your head so it seamlessly supports any hair accessory you put in your hair. It gives the comb “more” to hold onto.

It’s an ingenious solution to a problem women have been faced with for centuries. The hair you collect is your own, so it is the same color and thickness. You know where it’s come from- so it’s not (too) gross. But most importantly, it works.

Start by discretely gathering your own hair from your hair brush instead of throwing it away. Keep gathering it for a few months - and once you have a sufficient amount, shape it into an appropriate shape to support your hairstyle. You could use it to add body to the top of your hair - underneath your own - or you could bring it to your hairdresser for use during hairstyle test runs. Don’t worry - she won’t think it’s too yucky. Ratts are a time honored way to add bulk to your hair without much effort.

New Product: “Avery” vintage look barrette - dta0473

DTAbridal.com is always adding new products - this week, it’s this vintage look barrette, studded with rhinestones on silver metal. It’s a lovely piece; flashy but not too much. It’s got a timeless glamour I think you’ll really like.

This would look smashing just underneath a simple veil on a comb. A brief flash under your veil for the ceremony - then remove the veil for the reception to uncover this pretty waiting underneath. At $48, this barrette looks like a one of a kind, antique piece.

Remington Emi Airwave Hairdryer: My new obsession

June 13, 2009

This could be the Best. Invention. Ever.

Like, better than Directv. Or those great crackers that are one side cracker, one side pretzel. No, my friend. Much better than that.

It’s the Remington Emi Airwave hair dryer, that upon sectioning your hair into 1″ lengths, inserting into the odd cone part of the dryer:

…creates curled, vaguely dreadlock looking, perfectly dried hair which, when finger separated, creates magnificent wavy hair. Put a little product in your hair first for waves that last.

I’m hooked.

Doing your hair by yourself for your wedding and are all thumbs? Need to make that stick straight hair got some body and movement for the Big Day? When I got married, this would have saved my sanity on my wedding day.

$20 or so at Target and Amazon.
